Cell > Structure and function of cells > Transport of macromolecules and production of energy in different cells
Substances move through the cell membranes by two different processes called active or passive transport. The latter requires energy that is derived from the glucose burning that happens through cellular breathing in the mitochondria. This energy can either be a result of food processing or of photosynthesis. Plant cells make photosynthesis through which they produce their food and the oxygen that is necessary for the survival of organisms.
Connection to Big Idea about energy: The cells produce energy either with the help of the sun or by breaking up the food they consume for their needs.
Connection to Big Idea about particles: A cell requires energy so as to construct its biological molecules and make all the chemical reactions that are needed. A cell needs small molecules that make different kinds of bonds in order to construct complex organic matter.
Connection to Big Idea about evolution: Each type of organism has developed different ways of producing and transporting energy in its cells, which is adapted to their environment.

PLATON is a two-year European project launched on September 2016. It aspires to provide teachers and school communities with a coherent teachers’ training framework which will update their current teaching practices. More particularly, PLATON aims to offer an open and innovative training framework to teachers of primary and secondary education which will focus on:
