Organisms can either be unicellular or multicellular. Unicellular organisms are formed by only one cell. These include microorganisms like some fungi and bacteria and have a relatively simple structure. Multicellular organisms are formed by more than one cell and include all animals and most plants, being their structure more complex.

Connection to Big Idea about energy: All organisms need energy for their proper functioning. They either produce energy by exploiting energy coming from the Sun or by processing food.

Connection to Big Idea about particles: All organisms, from the smallest - not discernible in the eye - to the larger ones, consist of biological macromolecules that bind together and form complex compounds that ultimately construct their cells and organs.

Connection to Big Idea about evolution: Perpetuation of genetic information takes place through reproduction. Each organism inherits a unique combination of genes which defines the structure and function of that organism. Thus, in nature there is a wide variety of different species.

Connection to Big Idea about Earth: The morphology, development and different functions of organisms that live on Earth are closely related to environmental conditions prevailing in their ecosystems.

PLATON is a two-year European project launched on September 2016. It aspires to provide teachers and school communities with a coherent teachers’ training framework which will update their current teaching practices. More particularly, PLATON aims to offer an open and innovative training framework to teachers of primary and secondary education which will focus on:

  • Promoting student-centred teaching approaches;
  • Promoting a holistic interdisciplinary approach;
  • Support the use of online educational tools;
  • Support the meaningful collaboration between teachers of the same school.
