Forces > Types of interactions > Strong nuclear interaction and its effects
The strong nuclear interaction acts on subatomic particles and it is what keeps atomic nuclei together. The strong interaction is the strongest of all interactions but it has a very short range.
Connection to Big Idea about energy: The strong nuclear force is responsible for binding atomic nuclei and for the energy that is released during nuclear fusions/fission.
Connection to Big Idea about the universe: The strong nuclear force is important in nuclear fusion which is what fuels a star and creates elements up to iron.
Connection to Big Idea about particles: The strong nuclear force is what keeps quarks glued together to make heavier composite particles, such as hadrons and mesons. It also binds together protons and neutrons to form atomic nuclei.
Connection to Big Idea about quantum: The strong nuclear force acts on elementary particles like quarks and heavier ones like proton and neutrons. As its effects are present at the smallest scales of atoms and subatomic particles, they are in accordance with the laws of quantum mechanics.

PLATON is a two-year European project launched on September 2016. It aspires to provide teachers and school communities with a coherent teachers’ training framework which will update their current teaching practices. More particularly, PLATON aims to offer an open and innovative training framework to teachers of primary and secondary education which will focus on:
