An oscillation is a type of motion during which the force acting on the moving object is always opposite to the direction of the displacement from the equilibrium point. Thus, the object returns periodically to its initial position after a certain time. Oscillations can be found in many different occasions in our world, from oscillating pendulum in clocks to alternating current circuits, as well as in biological, chemical, quantum mechanical and climate processes, among others.
Connection to Big Idea about energy: The energy of an object in oscillation is equal to its kinetic and potential energies. The total mechanical energy of the harmonic oscillator remains constant during its motion.
