Linear or rectilinear motions are motions that occur in one dimension (the object is moving in a straight line). Depending on the acting forces the object can have constant or varying speed. They can be described with equations using one spatial variable plus the time variable.

Connection to Big Idea about particles: Small particles like all objects can perform linear motions. These motions can be due to the existence of the electromagnetic force (Coulomb force). During a nuclear decay, particles can move in linear trajectories due to the act of the weak force.
