Organisms depend on other organisms and interact with the environment they live in. The larger the variety of organisms in an ecosystem, the more stable it is.
Connection to Big Idea about energy: The growth of organism populations depends on the limit of energy resources of the ecosystems they are in.
Connection to Big Idea about evolution: Organisms evolved separately to be completely different from one another but at the same time, to depend on others to survive and continue evolving. The evolution of one species and their population also depends on the evolution and population of other species as well as their access to their ecosystems resources.
Connection to Big Idea about the cell: Most cells get the energy they need to survive through food. Organisms are related to each other through food chains. Some animals eat plants to survive and others eat other animals, which in turn eat plants. Plants, in turn, depend on animals and insects for pollination.

About
PLATON is a two-year European project launched on September 2016. It aspires to provide teachers and school communities with a coherent teachers’ training framework which will update their current teaching practices. More particularly, PLATON aims to offer an open and innovative training framework to teachers of primary and secondary education which will focus on:
- Promoting student-centred teaching approaches;
- Promoting a holistic interdisciplinary approach;
- Support the use of online educational tools;
- Support the meaningful collaboration between teachers of the same school.
