Genetic traits are transferred from parents to offspring and this phenomenon is called heredity. There are prevalent and residual traits, features related to sex and traits equivalent in both species. Mendel was the first to study heredity. Gender trees help us study the way a trait is inherited and calculate the probability of a descendant displaying the trait or not.
Connection to Big Idea about the cell: All cells in an organism have the same genetic content, but the genes used (expressed) by the cell may be regulated in different ways. The genetic features are found in the DNA of the cells and are inherited from the parents to the offsprings.
Connection to Big Idea about Earth: The expression of genetic traits may be influenced by changes in the Earth’s environment.

About
PLATON is a two-year European project launched on September 2016. It aspires to provide teachers and school communities with a coherent teachers’ training framework which will update their current teaching practices. More particularly, PLATON aims to offer an open and innovative training framework to teachers of primary and secondary education which will focus on:
- Promoting student-centred teaching approaches;
- Promoting a holistic interdisciplinary approach;
- Support the use of online educational tools;
- Support the meaningful collaboration between teachers of the same school.
