INFORMATION ABOUT THE SMALL IDEA

Universe > Earth and the solar system > Earth, Sun and the Moon

Sun, Earth and the Moon consists a triple hierarchical system. The Earth rotates around itself, the moon revolves around Earth and the two objects revolve together around the Sun. The rotation of Earth around itself takes 24 hours and creates the day and night. The full revolution of Earth around the Sun takes a year. Finally the Moon makes a full revolution around Earth in about 29 days. The revolution of the moon around Earth produces several phenomena, the most important one being the tides.

Connection to Big Idea about energy: Heat energy from the Sun enables life on Earth to exist, through chemical reactions such as photosynthesis. The orbits of the Earth and the Moon are determined by their mechanical energies.

Connection to Big Idea about forces: The moon is held in orbit around the Earth via the force of gravity; the Earth is held in orbit around the Sun by the same force. The gravity between these object affect life on Earth and causes different phenomena like tides.
