The PLATON 3D Interdisciplinary Map of Science Ideas is published!


The PLATON team identified a very common problem that teachers face when teaching science. The science curricula usually focus on standalone concepts that students can’t relate to any other topic or daily life. As such, with the aim of creating a bigger perspective of science the 3D Interdisciplinary Map of Science Ideas was created.


What does it do?


It bridges the gap between the small isolated ideas in the curricula and the Big Ideas of Science (BIS) with two intermediate levels.

How does it work?


Establishes connections between all levels.

  • Allows for a gradual progression from the concrete small ideas to the big abstract ones.
  • Makes connections between 3 Dimensions: Big Ideas of Science (1D), Subjects in which the small idea can be found (2D) and the Grade in which it is taught (3D).


What’s in it for me?
It allows you to teach science in an interdisciplinary framework, connecting different classes’ content and working together with colleague teachers!

Now imagine you were teaching your students the small idea (isolated concept) Neutralization. Click on the “small ideas of Science” button and just write the idea in the filters:

Then, select the “Apply” button and something like this will come up:
