INFORMATION ABOUT THE SMALL IDEA

Earth > Earth materials and structure > The eras of Earth

Our planet was born 4,5 billion years ago. Because of the existence of water and oxygen life sprout and many different organisms were created. The analysis of rocks, fossils and matter from other celestial objects of our solar system (e.g. Moon and comets) provide information about Earth’s past. Some processes occurred over long periods of time, while others happened much faster. The early Earth used to be very different from the Earth we know today. Over different eras, different species were created (or evolved from older ones) or became extinct.

Connection to Big Idea about the universe: The history of the Earth is intimately connected to the evolution of the Solar System, from the life cycle of the Sun to the interactions between the planets. Studying other objects of our solar system can give us information about Earth’s history and formation.
